Subject: Child Development GCSE

Description of activities:-

 

This course will develop a student’s understanding of the following areas:

  • Family and parenting
  • Preparation for pregnancy and birth
  • Physical development
  • Nutrition and health
  • Intellectual, social and emotional development of a child under 5
  • Community support

 

Learning will be assessed by:

  • Unit B011 – 30% - Controlled Assessment: short tasks.  These are divided into three short research projects which are each worth 10%
  • Unit B012 – 30% - Coursework – A Child Study Task.  This will involve a series of observations and a detailed report on the development of a child under 5 years old.
  • Unit B013 – 40 % - A single 1 ½ hour examination covering all aspects of the coursework content listed above.

Autumn 1st half term

Family and parenting including:

  • Family structures in the UK
  • Changing patterns of family life
  • Children in care
  • Pre-conceptual health and care
  • Family planning

Preparation for pregnancy and birth:

  • Health and well-being in pregnancy (linked to controlled assessment 1)
  • Ante-natal  and post natal provision

Autumn 2nd half term

Introduction to nutrition for the newborn baby

  • Feeding the newborn baby – breast and bottle feeding (linked to controlled assessment 2)

Introduction to physical, intellectual, emotional and social development:

  • The newborn baby
  • Stages of physical development
  • Physical development milestones
  • Stages of intellectual development
  • The development of language
  • Social development
  • Social play
  • Behaviour and discipline
  • Learning through play
  • Selection of toys (linked to controlled assessment 3)

Spring 1st half term

 Continue introduction to physical, intellectual, emotional and social development:

  • See above

 

Spring 2nd half term

Introduction of Child Study Task (To be completed by the end of the summer term).

 

Summer 1st half term

Continuation of Child Study Task (To be completed by the end of the summer term).

Summer 2nd half term

Continuation of Child Study Task (To be completed by the end of the summer term).

 

Year 10 examination preparation and exam will take place during June

Controlled assessment/Coursework

 

Task 1: A healthy lifestyle is essential for a pregnant mother and her unborn baby.

Plan and product a booklet or fact sheets to be given to a first time mother.

Include the resources required to carry out the task.

Written evidence must be included to support the work carried out.

Evaluate your work. (10% of final grade).

 

Task 2: Breast and bottle feeding.

There is a wide variety of opinions about breast and bottle feeding.

Plan and produce a magazine article that compares breast and bottle feeding to help mothers make informed decisions.

Include the resources required to carry out the task.

Written evidence must be included to support the work carried out.

Evaluate your work. (10% of final grade).

 

Task 3: Buying toys.

Playing with toys is an important part in every child’s development.

Plan and carry out an investigation into the aspects that should be considered when buying the three named types of toy for a two to three year old.

 

You must investigate a:

  • Tricycle
  • Playhouse
  • Puzzle

 

Choose a range of appropriate factors to investigate, to help your comparison of the named toys.

Include the resources required to carry out the task

Clearly record and display all results, using them as evidence on which to base conclusions.

Written evidence must be included to support the work carried out.

Evaluate your work.  (10% of final grade).

 

Task 4: To research, analyse and evaluate an area of development in a child under five (30% of final grade)

 

Tasks 1, 2 and 3 are completed during Year 10.  Task 4 is completed during Year 10 and finalised during the first half of the Autumn term in Year 11.
