Literacy

Literacy Policy

  • We value the importance of Literacy at The Academy, Selsey. In order to equip pupils with skills for lifelong learning, the development of these skills is supported in the following ways: Literacy is an integral feature of all lessons to support good learning and communication;
  • Literacy intervention supports targeted students, both individually and in small groups. These interventions include: paired reading, 1:1 reading sessions with a Teaching Assistant or Reading Volunteer, phonics and phonics booster sessions, twice weekly sessions to support students with spelling or weekly morning sessions to support students with building their vocabulary ;
  • All subject specific literacy skills, such as the use of specialist key terms and extended writing in appropriate formats is developed through lessons;
  • Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) sessions are an integral daily part of the tutor time programme, to promote independent reading for enjoyment across the whole school;
  • Spelling challenges are set, worked towards and assessed weekly, across the school, through the tutor time programme;
  • The library is open every day to all pupils with a generous borrowing allowance (6 books at a time);
  • Pupils have the opportunity to participate in Book Award events;
  • A student- led paired reading scheme supports targeted pupils with reading in morning sessions, with their peer reading mentor in the library;
  • Designated library lessons support reading fiction and information literacy skills. This is supported by the Accelerated Reader programme which charts and rewards students for their achievements;
  • Regular book fairs provide opportunities for pupils to purchase books for their own enjoyment;
  • Students contribute articles towards the school magazine.
