As a school we embrace language learning, recognising the importance of equipping our students for life in a multi-cultural world. Our skilled staff are passionate about language learning and strive to make it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all our students. We encourage active participation in lessons and expect students to complete a learning, research based or written homework task each week to help them achieve their potential.

All key stage 3 students learn French from year 7.  We encourage as many students as possible to gain a qualification in a modern foreign language and we also support those students who wish to take a GCSE in their heritage language.

In key stage 3 students learn the vocabulary and structures needed to talk and write about a range of topics related to themselves including family, friends, school, free time, holidays and the local area. They also have the opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of those countries where French is spoken.

Those students who opt for a modern foreign language at key stage 4 follow the Edexcel GCSE course. This builds on the language already learned at key stage 3 and extends it to enable students to develop the skills needed to use their language when travelling, at work and for further study.

We believe that languages really come to life when students have the opportunity to travel to countries where the language is spoken. In recent years, we have teamed up with humanities to run a very successful and popular trip to Belgium.

In Years 7, 8 & 9 students also have the opportunity to study French/Spanish - whichever is not their main subject.
